April Newsletter 2010 – Helpful Math Websites

April 3, 2010

Welcome to our first official post from our site :-)

We plan on sending you an awesome website with suggestions on its use within your grade levels once a month.  The grade levels will be broken down into grade spans of K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

Why are we sending out notices once a month and not more regularly?  We believe that the last thing you need is to have your email boxes overflowing with emails from us.  Should you need more suggestions, we will have materials on our website that you can easily access for free.  Also, over the next 3 months, we will be updating and adding/removing websites.  This way you will always have your “finger on the pulse” of all that is new and creative from web 2.0 for ELLs, ELLs in mainstream classes, and students from all walks of life in general.  Kids love technology so it is a tool we need to weave into our classes if we are to truly prepare them for a future in which many of the jobs they will enter have not yet been created.

The website this month is (applause, applause)…. http://www.coolmath.com/

This site covers creative approaches in making all forms of math fun for students, teachers, and parents.  It adds a real world application to pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus.  Lessons and games on each of the above are found here.

The second website (I know I only said one, but the math is addressed on elementary and high school levels hence the need to offer the elementary school counterpart) is www.coolmath4kids.com.  Though aimed at elementary school age children, it could also be used for those older students with limited education in their native language.  After all, if a student doesn’t have the basics down, he will never be able to make sense of the more demanding levels of high math.

Hope you enjoy the sites!

Until next month…

Denise, Cheryl, and  Marnie
